Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Mollepata – Soraypampa – Huayracmachay – Chaullay- Colpampa

Your journey on the Machu Picchu Salkantay Trek begins early as we wake up to the crisp Andean morning. At 6:00 AM, we will pick you up from your Cusco hotel and set off toward Mollepata, a charming town nestled at 2,800 meters (9,186 feet). During the 2.5-hour drive, you will soak in panoramic views of the Apurimac Valley, where terraced fields and rugged cliffs paint a timeless landscape. In Mollepata, we will pause for a hearty breakfast, fueling up for the adventure ahead.

From there, we will drive another hour to Sayllapata, the official start of the Salkantay Trail Peru. At 3,200 meters (10,499 feet), you will meet our skilled muleteers and chef, who will ensure your comfort throughout the trek. The first leg of the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu will lead you through traditional Andean villages like Challacancha and Cruzpata. Over two hours, you will walk past stone-walled farms and grazing alpacas, immersing yourself in local culture.

By midday, we will gather for a freshly prepared lunch, recharging with flavors of Peruvian cuisine. Afterward, the trail ascends gently to Soraypampa, a high-altitude plateau flanked by snow-capped peaks. From here, we will hike for four hours toward our campsite, crossing streams and wild meadows dotted with ichu grass. As daylight fades, you will reach your secluded camping spot, surrounded by the raw beauty of the Andes at 4,200 meters (13,780 feet).

Rest assured, our team will handle every detail—from pitching tents to serving a warm dinner under starlit skies. Today’s journey covers roughly 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) over 6–7 hours, blending moderate climbs with moments of quiet wonder. As you settle into your cozy camping accommodation, reflect on the day’s contrasts: the vibrant valleys at 2,200 meters (7,218 feet) and the crisp, thin air of the high Andes. Tomorrow, the Salkantay Pass awaits, but for now, let the mountain whispers lull you to sleep.

Day 2: Colpampa – La Playa – Lucma

Rise with the Andes as our team greets you at dawn with steaming coca tea or Peruvian coffee, a gentle start to Day 2 of the Machu Picchu Salkantay Trek. We will set out early toward the Salkantay Pass, ascending steadily to 4,600 meters (15,092 feet), the highest point of the Salkantay Trail Peru.

Along the way, gaze up at the icy crown of Salkantay Mountain, towering at 6,271 meters (20,574 feet). Weather permitting, clear skies will reveal panoramic vistas of Humantay and Huayanay peaks, glacial lakes, and ancient moraines—a photographer’s paradise.

After three hours of hiking, we will reach Huayra Machay, resting at 3,700 meters (12,139 feet). Catch your breath here before descending through ever-changing landscapes. Verdant valleys will replace rocky trails as we drop toward Collpapampa, our evening stop at 2,600 meters (8,530 feet). A nourishing lunch en route will keep your energy high, with fresh local ingredients prepared by our chef.

The day’s 15-kilometer (9.3-mile) trek spans 6–7 hours, blending rugged ascents with serene downhill paths. By sunset, we will settle into our campsite near Collpapampa, surrounded by orchids and birdsong. As our crew pitches tents and prepares dinner, reflect on the journey—from thin, crisp air at the pass to the humid warmth of the cloud forest. Tonight, rest under starry skies, ready for tomorrow’s adventures deeper into the Salkantay Trail.

Day 3: A Playa – Llactapata – Hidroeléctrica – Aguas Calientes

Day 3 of the Machu Picchu Salkantay Trek welcomes you to the lush embrace of the cloud forest. We will start with a gentle four-hour downhill hike along the Salkantay Trail Peru, descending from 2,600 meters (8,530 feet) into the Ceja de Selva—a misty high jungle zone. As you walk, breathe in the scent of coffee and cocoa plantations and spot tropical fruits like passionfruit dangling overhead.

Pause to cool off under a natural waterfall shower, its waters fed by mountain streams, and keep your eyes peeled for the vibrant Gallito de las Rocas, Peru’s national bird, fluttering among the trees.

After exploring this fertile paradise, we will drive you through Santa Teresa’s dramatic canyon landscapes to Hidroelectrica, a bustling stop at 1,950 meters (6,398 feet). Here, enjoy a hearty lunch before choosing your final stretch: a scenic three-hour hike along historic train tracks to Aguas Calientes or a 30-minute train ride (optional, $34 USD). Walking the same path Hiram Bingham used to rediscover Machu Picchu adds a layer of magic to your Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu.

By evening, we will settle into a cozy hotel in Aguas Calientes at 2,040 meters (6,693 feet), where ensuite rooms and hot showers await. Today’s 12-kilometer (7.5-mile) journey spans 4–5 hours, blending jungle immersion with glimpses of Andean history. As you savor dinner, let the excitement build—tomorrow, we’ll rise early to conquer the hike to Machu Picchu, just steps away from its ancient gates.

Day 4: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

The final day of your Machu Picchu Salkantay Trek begins before dawn as we board the tourist bus from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu, climbing 400 meters (1,312 feet) to the citadel’s gates at 2,430 meters (7,970 feet). Your local guide will navigate security checks, leading you into the UNESCO World Heritage Site as morning light bathes its terraces. We will explore Machu Picchu’s secrets during a two-hour guided tour, wandering the Main Plaza, Temple of the Sun, and ceremonial ruins where Inca priests once stood.

After the tour, you will have free time to absorb the wonder alone. For adventurous souls, we can pre-arrange hikes up Huayna Picchu Mountain (2,720 meters / 8,924 feet) or Machu Picchu Mountain—just notify us when booking. Alternatively, walk to Intipunku (Sun Gate), a two-hour round-trip offering iconic views of the citadel. This ancient entrance, used by Inca Trail hikers, requires no fee and rewards you with panoramas steeped in history.

By midday, we will take the bus back to Aguas Calientes, where you can enjoy a leisurely lunch before boarding the train to Ollantaytambo. At the train station, our representative will greet you for a scenic drive through the Sacred Valley, retracing the footsteps of the Salkantay Trail Peru. As the sun dips behind Andean peaks, we will arrive in Cusco by 9:00 PM, marking the end of your Machu Picchu Salkantay Trek.
